The first days in Vienna
Vienna is a fantastic city – but the bureaucracy can be overwhelming, especially when you don’t yet speak the language well. Here’s your roadmap.
Weeks 1–2: The basics
At the authorities (Magistrat/MA35)
Key phrases:
- „Ich möchte mich anmelden.“ (I’d like to register.)
- „Ich brauche eine Aufenthaltsbewilligung.“ (I need a residence permit.)
- „Wo finde ich das Formular für...?“ (Where do I find the form for...?)
- „Können Sie das bitte wiederholen?“ (Could you please repeat that?)
Flat-hunting
- „Ist die Wohnung noch verfügbar?“ (Is the flat still available?)
- „Wie hoch ist die Kaution?“ (How much is the deposit?)
- „Sind die Betriebskosten inklusive?“ (Are the utility costs included?)
Weeks 3–4: Settling in at work
Introducing yourself
- „Ich bin neu hier und freue mich auf die Zusammenarbeit.“
- „Könnten Sie mir zeigen, wie das hier funktioniert?“
Viennese specifics
In Vienna, people say:
- „Passt!“ instead of “Okay”
- „Geh bitte!“ (expression of surprise)
- „Servus“ as both a greeting and a farewell
Quick Tip
Viennese dialect sounds softer than standard German. Listen carefully – „a bisserl“ means “a little bit” and „leiwand“ means “great”.
Weeks 5–12: Getting ahead
Networking in German
- Attend industry meetups and after-work events
- Introduce yourself in 30 seconds (your “elevator pitch”)
- Ask questions: „Was machen Sie beruflich?“
