Why B2-level mistakes are so stubborn
At B2 level, you communicate fluently – but certain mistakes creep in and become habits. The problem: the longer you make them, the harder they are to correct. The good news: with awareness and targeted practice, they disappear quickly.
The 10 most common mistakes
1. Wrong adjective endings
- Wrong: „Das ist ein guter Idee.“
- Right: „Das ist eine gute Idee.“
Tip: Learn adjective endings together with their articles. „Eine gute Idee“ – always memorize as a unit.
2. Confusing „als“ and „wenn“
- „als“ = one-time event in the past: „Als ich nach Wien kam...“
- „wenn“ = repeated or future: „Wenn ich müde bin...“
3. Wrong prepositions
- Wrong: „Ich bin interessiert in Marketing.“
- Right: „Ich bin interessiert an Marketing.“ / „Ich interessiere mich für Marketing.“
Tip: Always learn verbs with their preposition: sich freuen AUF (future event), sich freuen ÜBER (something received).
4. Verb position in subordinate clauses
- Wrong: „Ich denke, dass wir sollten das besprechen.“
- Right: „Ich denke, dass wir das besprechen sollten.“
Rule: In subordinate clauses, the conjugated verb goes at the end.
5. Confusing „seit“ and „vor“
- „seit“ = action is still ongoing: „Ich lebe seit 3 Jahren in Wien.“
- „vor“ = action is completed: „Ich bin vor 3 Jahren nach Wien gezogen.“
Quick Tip
Test yourself: Is the situation STILL active? → „seit“. Is it FINISHED? → „vor“.
6. Incorrect use of Konjunktiv II
- Wrong: „Ich will einen Kaffee.“ (sounds direct / demanding)
- Right: „Ich hätte gerne einen Kaffee.“ (more polite)
In business: Use Konjunktiv II for requests, suggestions, and polite phrasing.
7. Wrong word order after connectors
- Wrong: „Trotzdem ich bin müde, arbeite ich weiter.“
- Right: „Trotzdem arbeite ich weiter.“ / „Obwohl ich müde bin, arbeite ich weiter.“
8. Gender mistakes with common words
These words are frequently used incorrectly:
- das E-Mail (in Austria) / die E-Mail (in Germany)
- der Firma → correct: die Firma
- das Meeting (not „der“ or „die“)
9. Forming the passive incorrectly
- Wrong: „Das Projekt wird bearbeiten.“
- Right: „Das Projekt wird bearbeitet.“
Formula: werden + Partizip II
10. Too many Anglicisms
- Instead of „Ich muss das Meeting canceln“ → „Ich muss das Meeting absagen.“
- Instead of „Das ist ein guter Deal“ → „Das ist ein gutes Angebot.“
In a business context: Some Anglicisms are accepted (Meeting, Deadline, Feedback), others sound unprofessional.
How to get rid of these mistakes
- Become aware: Identify your personal top 3 mistakes.
- Practice deliberately: Write 5 sentences with the tricky topic every day.
- Seek correction: Get corrected by a trainer – immediately, not just before an exam.
- Read, read, read: Reading German texts sharpens your language instinct.
