Why the oral exam is so challenging

For many candidates, the oral ÖSD C1 exam is the most nerve-wracking part. You can't revise on the spot, you must think quickly, and everything happens in real time. But with the right preparation, the oral exam becomes manageable – and even an opportunity to shine.

The structure of the oral exam

The ÖSD C1 oral exam lasts 15–20 minutes and has three parts:

Part 1: Presentation (3–4 minutes)

You prepare a short presentation on a given topic. Speak in a structured way: introduction → two or three main points → conclusion. Use connectors like darüber hinaus, einerseits – andererseits, zusammenfassend.

Part 2: Discussion with a partner

You discuss a topic with another candidate or the examiner. Listen carefully, respond to what was said, and use phrases like:

  • Ich sehe das etwas anders, weil...
  • Das stimmt, allerdings...
  • Guter Punkt – ich möchte noch ergänzen, dass...

Part 3: Image description and commentary

You describe an image and give your opinion. Structure: what you see → what it could mean → your personal stance.

The most important phrases for C1

For presenting:

  • Ich möchte heute über ... sprechen.
  • Zunächst komme ich zu..., dann werde ich ..., und abschließend...
  • Zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen, dass...

For agreeing and disagreeing:

  • Ich teile Ihre Meinung, jedoch...
  • Das sehe ich ähnlich, aber ich möchte ergänzen...
  • Ich bin anderer Meinung, weil...

Quick Tip

Practice speaking aloud every day – even if just for 5 minutes. Your brain needs to get used to thinking and speaking in German simultaneously. A language partner or coach is ideal for this.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Apologizing for your German: Never say Entschuldigung, mein Deutsch ist nicht so gut. Just speak.
  • Filler words: Ähm, also, quasi – replace them with deliberate pauses.
  • Too fast: Slow, clear German sounds more confident than rushed speech.
  • No eye contact: Look at the examiner – this signals confidence.

How to prepare in the last week

  1. Do a complete practice run under exam conditions (timed, no notes)
  2. Record yourself and listen back – identify what to improve
  3. Revise your most important connectors and phrases
  4. Get enough sleep – mental freshness matters more than last-minute cramming

The oral ÖSD C1 exam is challenging but absolutely passable with systematic preparation. At KLARER.Academy we offer targeted C1 preparation – including practice runs, feedback, and individual coaching.
