What is the ÖSD C1 exam?
The ÖSD C1 confirms that you command German at an advanced level. You can understand complex texts, express yourself spontaneously and fluently, and use the language flexibly in professional and academic contexts. For many executives and academics in Austria, it’s an important career milestone.
The four exam sections in detail
1. Reading (90 minutes)
You work through four tasks:
- Task 1: Global comprehension – matching headings to text sections
- Task 2: Detailed comprehension – multiple-choice questions on a long text
- Task 3: Selective reading – finding information in a text
- Task 4: Language building blocks – gap-fill with grammar and vocabulary
Strategy: Read the task FIRST. Underline key terms. Work efficiently – you have an average of 22 minutes per task.
2. Listening (approx. 40 minutes)
Two tasks:
- Task 1: A longer conversation or interview – take notes
- Task 2: A lecture or radio programme – multiple choice
Strategy: Read the questions before listening. First listen: grasp the main points. Second listen: note the details.
Quick Tip
Train your listening comprehension with Austrian media: ORF Ö1, FM4 (in German), and podcasts like „Ö1 Morgenjournal“. This helps you get used to the Austrian speaking pace and accent.
3. Writing (90 minutes)
Two tasks:
- Task 1: Formal letter or email (approx. 200 words) – e.g. complaint, enquiry, position statement
- Task 2: Summary and commentary on a graph or text (approx. 250 words)
Strategy:
- Plan 5 minutes for structure
- Use connectors: darüber hinaus, nichtsdestotrotz, zusammenfassend lässt sich sagen
- Watch the register: C1 requires formal German
4. Speaking (15–20 minutes)
Three tasks:
- Task 1: Presentation on a given topic (3–4 minutes)
- Task 2: Discussion with the exam partner
- Task 3: Image description and commentary
Strategy:
- Practice presentations with structure: introduction → main points (2–3) → conclusion
- Use complex sentence structures and Konjunktiv II
- Maintain eye contact with the examiners

Common pitfalls in the ÖSD C1
- Writing too informally: C1 demands formal register
- Underestimating time management: Especially in reading and writing
- Forgetting connectors: They make the difference between B2 and C1
- Nervousness when speaking: Practice, practice, practice – routine is the best anxiety remedy
